Production of today's clean transportation fuels requires hydrogen for various unit operations including hydrocracking and hydrodesulfurization. Current refinery thirst for hydrogen has resulted in a variety of separation techniques aimed at purifying and recovering hydrogen from waste gas streams in the refinery. Adsorption, membranes and cryogenic systems have all been employed to help refiners overcome this hydrogen supply issue. An overview of these various separation techniques with respect to refinery hydrogen recovery will be addressed.
