This year our Student Affiliates chapter has focused on professional development activities and community service, providing a variety of successful programs such as organization of professional workshops and participation in graduate program in different research universities. Many chapter members participated in undergraduate research and presented their results at the local, regional, and national levels. We have also attempted to find creative ways of combining chemistry demonstrations and other activities to serve society. Recent activities during National Chemistry Week include making and giving away 300 samples of liquid nitrogen ice cream in the campus community and presenting a demonstration of shrinking polystyrene at our biggest local mall. Members of the SA chapter also routinely hold activities such as chemistry “magic shows” at local elementary schools and with Girl Scout troops. Such activities are particularly valuable to promote a positive image of chemistry in our society.
