Acridines, which possess significant biological interest, are efficiently synthesized under very mild conditions through the intermolecular tandem coupling of arynes and ortho-amino aryl ketones. This annulation presumably takes place via nucleophilic coupling of the ortho-substituted aniline, followed by subsequent electrophilic cyclization and dehydration to afford the aromatic system.
