| In the United States, the importance of research in nanoscience has led to a number of programs including a cooperative program in nanoscience research called CONTACT. The program has seven universities in Texas and the Air Force Research Laboratory working together in a consortium that is focused on basic research leading to transitions to the Air Force and the aerospace industry. The program has focused on four issues of prime interest to the Air Force. The areas selected are rich with potential not only for aerospace, but also for broad application in the commercial sector. A substantial program of capital investment has created laboratory centers that have the latest in state of the art equipment that not only serve the host institutions, but are enhancing the collaborations among the universities. This paper gives some insight into the scope of the program, areas of emphasis, and the infrastructure that supports the research program. The program features an interactive approach to define and initiate research efforts that will transition to industry and impact the commercial sector. |
