| Eighteen Ohio public and private Colleges and Universities have partnered to change the way undergraduate chemistry is instructed. This NSF funded project (REEL, Research Experience to Enhance Learning) introduces 1st and 2nd year undergraduate students to publishable quality projects through the development of modular units based on research interests of the involved faculty. Further, the project seeks to unite students throughout the state by engaging them in similar research projects, sharing of data and presenting their results at a semi-annual symposium. The consortium has also partnered with private industry to provide internships and support. Ohio needs this type of project to enhance STEM graduation rates while contributing toward the research productivity of the state. While Columbus State Community College is the only community college out of the 18 partner institutions, many of the partner institutions have developed modules that can be exported to community colleges. Modules developed by Columbus State Community College and The University of Toledo will be presented. The development, justification and results of the REEL consortium will be presented as well as the community college perspective as a REEL participant. |
