The 5 Oxo 5,6,7,8-tetrahydroimidazo [1,5-c] pyrimidine 7 carboxylic methyl ester (NPH) was synthesized from L-histidine methyl ester dihydrochloride and carbonyldiimidazole. The NPH was transformed into a model ionic liquid to investigate ring stability. Additional unique zwitterionic ionic liquids were characterized by obtaining melting point, IR, and NMR. The melting points measured were considerably higher than typical ionic liquids. The relatively high melting points were attributed to intermolecular electrostatic and hydrogen bonding interactions.
