Making connections between the topics that we teach in general chemistry and the “real world” that the students live in is a challenging yet rewarding endeavor. One of the most fruitful I have found is to relate the material my students are learning to the artwork that is being created on our campus. In fact, I find that creation of art is an excellent way to lead into as well as teach a number of topics. In this presentation I will discuss the creation of a variety of pieces of art including intaglio prints (redox reactions), frescos (chemical change), as well basic photography (reaction energetics) as a means to introduce and teach chemical concepts in a more meaningful and lasting fashion.
