Jim Sullivan first introduced me to the solution chemistry of actinide elements during a summer internship at ANL. We studied the kinetics of the reactions between An(IV) and U(VI) with Arsenazo III. I received a Coryell award from DNCT based on this work. Afterwards, I chose to attend graduate school at FSU with Professor Choppin. Jim was pleased about my decision and kept up with my progress. After two years, I went back to ANL where Jim, Dan Meisel, and myself investigated the reduction of U(VI) in the presence of synthetic polyelectrolytes. Later Jim furthered my career via recommendations to Professor Raymond at Cal Berkeley, and then to the late Dr. Gansow at the NCI. Selected research findings and Jim's exceptional mentoring will be discussed.
