Columbia University's NSF GK-12 Fellowship Program provides science and mathematics graduate students and New York City middle and high school science teachers with the opportunity to collaborate on inquiry-based lessons for use in their classrooms. The program is designed to encourage both fellows and educators to take on the role of expert where appropriate, thereby engaging all participants in teaching and learning. NSF GK-12 fellows lead a STEM education workshop that attracts educators from all five boroughs of New York City and the metropolitan area. We will discuss how the diverse backgrounds of these educators and the science backgrounds of the graduate fellows shaped the pedagogical discussions in physical and materials science workshops, with attention to the concepts of content, pedagogical, and pedagogical content knowledge.
