Queensborough Community College is part of the City University of New York whose students are mostly recent immigrants and the first members of their family to go to college. During the last six years the chemistry department has successfully created a vibrant research environment that has led to the awarding of several grants, purchasing of sophisticated instruments, publishing of at least nine peer reviewed papers bearing students' names and the doubling of class registration. The ways and means of achieving these goals and the consequence of this development on the students' lives will be highlighted.
