| This paper will discuss ways in which courses on environmental chemistry have been designed to emphasize the importance of understanding processes at the molecular-level in order to effectively address environmental issues. The courses use context-based approaches, in-class activities, and projects to motivate students to understanding fundamental chemical principles and apply these to look at current environmental issues. Student feedback and assessment of learning outcomes indicate that students understand the chemistry and appreciate the interplay between chemical understanding and defining policies around the environment. |
