| The decomposition of ammonia (DeA) and oxidative decomposition of ammonia (ODeA) have been comparatively studied over supported Ru, Pt and Ni catalysts for COx-free hydrogen production. Potassium addition promotes the activity of Ru/Al2O3 for both the DeA and ODeA. MgAl2O4 synthesized by a sol-gel method was found to be a good support for the Ru catalysts. The ODeA offered opportunity to obtain complete ammonia conversion at very high GNH3HSV, owing to its better and faster heat transfer from the adjacent exothermic oxidation reaction to the endothermic decomposition on the catalyst particles. Ammonia conversion over 99.9% was achieved over Ru/MgAl2O4 at a furnace temperature of 250 ºC with GNH3HSV = 400,000 mL/g-cat/h and O2/NH3 = 0.17. Reaction mechanism of the ODeA and NOx formation are also discussed based on the obtained results. In addition, the effect of chloride on the catalyst activity has been also investigated. |
