The challenge for science educators is to provide opportunities that will both motivate and engage students in learning. While motivation is crucial to student success, it is an incredibly difficult dimension to address. Couple this with the abstract nature of chemisty concepts and the diverse learning-styles of our students and the challenge can be very daunting. The formula we use to address this challenge weaves the art of storytelling, role-playing, and dramatic simulations together with multi-sensory interactions, multi-modal storyboarding protocols to build understanding, and good old fashion play. The presentation will include examples of these strategies and demonstrate how they can be used to illustrate abstract chemical concepts.
