Why would an industrial chemical company sponsor university research on energy or alternative feedstocks? Why not just leave it to the government and the big oil companies? What would the company expect to get in return? What about profits? Patentable inventions? What sort of contract terms are appropriate for university agreements?

These questions will be addressed in the context of Dow's strategy for university partnerships. Dow is focusing its sponsored research program on a few strategic universities where we can negotiate stronger intellectual property rights and work more closely with them on projects that have clear value for the company.
