| The presentation will include a variety of my favorite (low cost) demonstrations I use throughout the year to inspire students to think critically about chemistry and everyday phenomena. Such topics as gas pressure, combustion, precipitation, acids and bases, atomic structure, among others will be illustrated using liquid nitrogen, dry ice, overhead projectors and chemicals and glassware readily available in most high school labs or at the market. While performing the demos, I will describe how to modify their presentations to accommodate the range of levels and abilities of high school students, including the AP. Additionally, the workshop will highlight unique teaching strategies I employ, including mnemonic devices, humor and graphic organizers to enhance student engagement and understanding. Throughout the session there will be opportunities for open dialog among the participants. Concluding the session, the materials will be made available for participants to have their own hands-on experience. Hand-outs will be available. |
