Many junior faculty entering PUIs are excited to embrace the challenge of balancing teaching, service and scholarship. While the “Scholar-Teacher” model is not a new concept, how one can obtain such success has not been clearly or consistently defined. The road to accomplishing this creative endeavor can be complicated by conflicts between what is expected, what is supported, and what is valued as it relates to the three pearls of the professorate. Nevertheless, at the core of the “Scholar-Teacher” model is faculty's ability to establish and maintain a productive research program. The presentation will explore the realities of establishing a research program at a PUI. Further, focus will be given to establishing productive mentoring relationships and managing research with limited resources.
