| “The Amazing Chemical Circus” is a chemical education outreach event created by Fusion Science Theater, an NSF-funded project that uses theater to heighten the educational impact of traditional science demonstrations. The Circus featured three sets of demonstrations— spectral emissions, rates of combustion and polymers, performed by chemical educators as the acts of a circus. Characters of the Ringmaster and his assistant “Squirt” (played by local actors) introduced the acts, interacted with the audience and presenters, interjected humor, and coordinated participatory segments that brought children to the stage as atoms and molecules to act out underlying chemical concepts. Pre- and post-surveys of children in the audience showed a significant increase in interest and understanding of these concepts as a result of attending the show. |
