In this presentation we will discuss how for the past two years the ACS Student Affiliates Chapter of the University of Puerto Rico at Río Piedras campus has been involved in community service and National Chemistry Week activities. The nature of these activities was educational, motivational and social. As students we have the opportunity to plan and implement these activities directed to elementary, middle, high school students and the community in general. We learn how seek opportunities to initiate a project, acquire funding, and solicit assistance from chapter members, thus developing leadership skills. Finally, community service can promote cross-cultural awareness and we firmly believe that these activities encourage our members as individuals to improve: social consciousness, teamwork, effective communication, character, organizational skills, leadership, initiative, to relate to each other, and also self-insight. Skills that are critical for develop successful professionals.
