| ChemSketch is a free chemical drawing program developed by ACD/Labs. Structures drawn in ChemSketch can be viewed and rotated in 3D and both SMILES and IUPAC names can be generated. An online homework system has been created that compares the ChemSketch IUPAC name (or SMILES) with the answer's name to determine if a student has arrived at the correct answer. Available problem types include: naming, writing isomers, 3D / stereochemistry, predicting reaction products, synthesis, mechanisms, NMR/IR and word problems. This online approach to learning Organic Chemistry was first implemented at Lee University in the second semester course in Summer 2007. The average percentile on the Summer 2007 ACS Final Exam was 67 - a significant increase over previous exam results. The presentation will demonstrate the use of ChemSketch to generate answers to several different problem types and discuss the ACS Exam results in more detail. |
