Results of an assessment study designed to establish and compare the level of understanding of general chemistry concepts of students before and after the completion of general chemistry I will be presented. Statistical analyses of test results and demographic information collected were, and continue to be, analyzed for the purpose of course development and assessment. Pretest results were evaluate to determine student knowledge and understanding of basic general chemistry concepts coming into general chemistry I and for general chemistry I course development. Information gathered by the posttest is a component of departmental program assessment. A total of 800 students completed the pretest given at the beginning of the fall 2006, spring 2007, and fall 2007 semesters. 400 students completed a posttest consisting of the same questions, which were embedded in the semester exam at the end of the fall 2006 and spring of 2007 semesters.
