Atom transfer radical polymerization allows for the precise control of chain topology (e.g. stars, (hyper)branched, grafts, brushes) and composition (block, gradient, alternating) but also chain functionality. Functional groups have been incorporated into polymer side chains but also specifically to chain ends. In stars, nanogels and particles functional groups have been also attached to a core or to periphery. Segmented copolymers phase separate on nanoscale and functional groups have been incorporated into specific areas. Such materials can also respond to external stimuli and can be used for various applications.
