Drug discovery: Ingenuity or serendipity?

Basic principles of how drugs are discovered will be discussed, then various examples will be presented of how known drugs were discovered and how they work. The background and history of the discovery of Lyrica™, a new drug for the treatment of epilepsy, neuropathic pain, fibromyalgia, and generalized anxiety disorder that was invented in the author's laboratory, will be described. The question of whether the discovery of new drugs is rational or serendipitous will be entertained
