| Wonder is a profound emotion. In its primitive form, wonder may well be the first emotion we experience as human beings, arising even before the love we feel for dear sweet Mom. Later in life, great mysteries and their scientific analysis often provoke wonder. A public celebration of wonder—and its crucial, if incomplete, satisfaction through science—takes place around the San Francisco Bay every fall. The heart of this “Wonderfest, the Bay Area Festival of Science” is a series of dialogues between pairs of articulate researchers in discussion of provocative scientific questions. Wonderfest's ultimate goals are: (1) to enhance the public understanding of science, (2) to broaden the meaning of “scientific community,” and (3) to nurture our essential sense of wonder. In this talk, I describe Wonderfest's structure and operation; I lionize its principal champion, Dick Zare; and I encourage others to begin their own local celebrations of science. |
