Using small groups is a good way for active learning. Team-based learning (TBL) is a special approach to the use of small groups that takes both teaching and learning to a whole new level of educational significance. It is a particular instructional strategy designed to support the development of high performance learning teams and to provide opportunities for these teams to engage in significant learning tasks. With the support from the Center for Teaching, Learning, and Assessment in our university, I redesigned two of my courses, organic chemistry and the introductory chemistry course for non-science majors, to incorporate this innovative teaching strategy. It turned out to be rewarding to me and students with great attendance, well-prepared students, and high performance on exams.
