One of the longest international collaboration between China and the US is one with the University of Massachusetts (Amherst). This interaction started with a visit of two prominent scientists, Professor Qian Jen Yuan and Qian Bao Gong in 1978, immediately after the Cultural Revolution. Soon followed the first team of three visiting scholars. At one time there were over 23 scholars and students from China in the Polymer Science and Engineering Department. Since 1981, funding agencies of both countries have supported this exchange program. The interaction has produced numerous excellent scholars who influenced research and technology development of both countries, well beyond the specific area of polymeric materials. The University of Massachusetts (Amherst) has educated at least two Presidents of prominent Chinese universities and a Deputy Minister of Ministry of Agriculture. The interaction also produced a large number of scientists in US academic and industrial laboratories, and now involves new generation of scientists from both sides.
