| The independent consultant is not always viewed as an "asset" by a potential Client. Often the word "consultant" has been sullied by previous bad experiences, usually with government contractors that charge $500 for a cup of coffee on their first consultation! Life as an "independent", likewise, does not necessarily mean freedom... usually the opposite... as you are sometimes "prisoner" to the need to have "billable" time that someone will pay for (hopefully!). BUT... and notice the "Capitals"... if you are GOOD at your "craft" and have a small reputation to build on... there is no greater opportunity to grow your own business... expand your own horizons... control your own destiny... with some serious effort in time... usually "face time" in an exhibition booth... in front of some other teacher's class... under the scrutiny of a harried big company QC manager... or at the kitchen table of a small family business. |
