Almost all Ph.D. chemists and chemical engineers graduate from research-intensive, doctoral institutions. However, less than three hundred of the more than 4,000 educational institutions classified by the Carnegie Foundation are considered “research universities”. Furthermore, the majority of the open faculty positions listed in any given year are at institutions that do not offer a Ph.D. These schools do not fit a single model and do not have the same expectations of teaching, research and service. This presentation will present a survey of the career possibilities at the more than 3,500 institutions that serve primarily undergraduates and describe the range of opportunities available at this diverse group of institutions.
