| The NNI has made the analogy between nanotechnology and the industrial revolution, a bold claim that has generated a great deal of interest from the scientific and business communities. However, the translational barrier between fundamental discovery and technological development can be enormous. This presentation will discuss some of the first steps towards realizing the potential of nanotechnology in the biomedical arena. An effort will be made to separate hype from real opportunity in a field that is enormous in both potential and topical size. The presentation will focus specifically on discoveries that have led to major new capabilities in biodiagnostics and therapeutics. Emphasis will be on how fundamental discoveries in the novel chemistry and physics of nanomaterials have been translated into new technological innovations that are impacting cancer research, the monitoring and treatment of Alzheimer's disease, and proteomics. |
