The pharmaceutical industry provides career opportunities for chemists to move beyond their original training as, for example, synthetic organic chemists, and to become drug discovery scientists. The presentation will illustrate one potential career path in the context of work in diabetes research at Merck & Co., Inc., and will include an outline of the discovery of DPP-4 inhibitor Januvia™ (sitagliptin), which was approved in 2006 as a novel therapy for the treatment of type 2 diabetes.
