The ACS Exams Institute routinely produces nationally normed assessments for most courses in the undergraduate chemistry curriculum. Laboratory assessment, however, provides additional challenges for a comparative exam, in large part because key components of such an assessment do not mesh with the traditional multiple-choice format. Nonetheless, the Exams Institute has carried out some preliminary studies and held discussions with developers of laboratory assessment strategies. This talk will outline the nature of the challenges the Institute is seeking to overcome in the development of laboratory assessments with a national scope, and a timeline for future developments in this area will be delineated.
