A series of neutral receptors that bind anions through H-bonding interactions will be described. Several of these receptors are functionalised by the addition of a redox-active tag (ferrocene) that allows the electrochemical sensing of chiral carboxylates and acidic molecules, the latter through a proton transfer reaction. Other receptors are made functional through their choice of target anion, namely vanadate that allows them to act as mimics for the vanadium haloperoxidase enzymes that catalyse the halogenation of organic substrates.
