| The Argonne sample program was established to provide to the research community a small set of eight coals with minimum variation between samples and a long shelf life. A major purpose for these coals was to ensure that scientists were working on the same samples and the variations in results were not due to the samples. The eight coals were chosen to represent a majority of coals in the US. One ton of each coal was ground, homogenized, and sealed in glass ampoules, under nitrogen. In addition, large pieces have been made available for specific experiments. Samples have been distributed for over 20 years and there is still a large demand for them. This work was performed under the auspices of the U. S. Department of Energy, under Contract No. DE-AC02-06CH11357. |
