| Over the past four years, the University of Wisconsin Colleges Chemistry Department has been using ACS exams to assess many of our chemistry courses. From this assessment has grown a scholarship of teaching and learning project focusing on quantitative literacy ("numeracy") in our general chemistry classes for science/engineering majors and for nursing/allied health students. Working with members of the Department of Mathematics, this interdisciplinary program aims to implement and assess various teaching approaches in the area of quantitative literacy. Approaches to improve numeracy among our students have included strategies such as banning the use of calculators, think aloud exercises, sharing of numeracy questions among colleagues, student participation in numeracy learning workshops, and math/chemistry linking course. In this presentation the results of our assessment using the ACS exams will be discussed in relation to our efforts to improve quantitative literacy among our students. |
