Our Science Society was able to create campus programs for the last two National Chemistry Weeks that have followed the themes very closely. These topics could be illustrated very colorfully since they involved everyday living activities. In 2005, for the "Joy of Toys" our main speaker, Dr. David Bibas, from the California Science Center, gave an illustrated presentation of "Science in Toyland," the traveling exhibition which he created 15 years ago. Our students also engaged in a treasure hunt, "Hidden Chemistry," where teams competed for prizes. Clever hints were given to identify objects (which after all are composed of chemicals). Everyone was rewarded with delicious brownies, prepared by Science Society members to comprise a periodic table. In 2006, for "Your Home--It's All Built on Chemistry," at an outdoor luncheon celebration, our speaker, Mr. Gil Mislang of the Dunn Edwards Paint Company, brought coatings, building supplies, and brochures to help explain the chemical processes involved in constructing and maintaining our homes. Afterwards, program participants formed teams to compete in "Build-Go", a take-off on Bingo, played on huge periodic table charts with wooden (building) blocks. Players were energized with delicious cookies, stored in the "Mansions of Munchies" cookie jars, in line with the NCW Theme.
