The bis(β-diketone) ligands o-pbaH2 and m-pbaH2 yield cyclic binuclear and tetranuclear complexes respectively on reaction with Cu2+ (see sketch). The larger Cu4(m-pba)4 "molecular square" (Cu---Cu ca. 14 Å) binds guests such as 4,4′-bpy and C60. It is also an effective host for H2 gas storage: 0.65% (room temp, 75 atm) and 4.3% w/w (77 K, 43 atm). Thus, Cu4(m-pba)4 is an unusual example of a molecular species that functions well as a host for H2. Analogous data for Cu2(o-pba)2 (Cu---Cu 4.76 Å) and related hosts will be presented.
