Heparan Sulfate Proteoglycans play a major role in various pathological and physiological processes. It has been shown that sulfate groups are essential for their biological actions. To unravel the role of individual sulfate groups in developmental processes, we have synthesized and characterized a library of novel sulfotransferase inhibitors. The synthesized compounds were then examined for their ability to inhibit heparan sulfate O-sulfotransferases in animal cells. We have synthesized various scaffolds and identified certain functional modifications to be critical for inhibition.
