What key professional skills should students possess to insure quick career success? This is an important question that all soon-to-be graduates must ask themselves as then enter an age governed by interdisciplinary technology and a global economy. This contribution will identify critical aspects of professional development that will help facilitate a smooth transition from graduate school to industry, and beyond. These include communication, leadership, team building, and research skills combined with an appreciation for research application, innovation, and lifelong learning. While current curricula in STEM disciplines is expanding to include these educational aspects, there is often a disconnect between academia and “the real world.” However, pursuing research opportunities and professional development activities can help provide these skills and lead to an enhanced educational experience.
