The Inorganic Chemistry Curricular Initiative, funded by the Mellon Foundation, brought together six inorganic chemistry faculty at primarily undergraduate institutions (PUIs) to explore the benefits of face-to-face networking in a series of seminars and brainstorming sessions. After discussions at these seminars we recognized the inherent value in formalized networking opportunities. The current stage, IONiC (Interactive Online Network of Inorganic Chemists), is forging an intellectual network of inorganic chemistry faculty at PUIs for the purposes of sharing and collaborating on curricular innovations and professional development. The participants in this network will both contribute to and draw upon a range of activities that will inform and improve the teaching and learning of inorganic chemistry at our institutions. The next phases in our project will involve building an online interactive community of teaching resources and a “back-to-graduate school” workshop that will serve as an intensive professional and curriculum development opportunity for participants.
