A series of compounds containing ruthenium in a polypyridyl coordination environment separated by either a dibenzofuran or xanthene spacer have been prepared. These complexes contain two coordinated aquo ligands oriented in a cofacial fashion to facilitate water oxidation. The catalytic activity of these complexes toward water oxidation to molecular oxygen will be addressed in detail. Preparation, characterization, and electrochemical studies of these complexes will also be presented.
