On Saturday, November 7, 1987, chemists celebrated the 1st National Chemistry Day. This vision of former ACS president Dr. George C. Pimental was to have a nationwide public event to bring the importance of chemistry to our everyday life to the communities we live in. In 1989 it was expanded to a full-week event and an annual event in 1993. Over the years this public outreach celebration in communities and schools has grown to be a nationwide event. This historical perspective will provide information on local section volunteer involvement, yearly themes, contest, demonstrations, exhibits, public coverage and government recognition.
