George Pimentel's legacy is centered on his research findings and on his national leadership in chemistry. He was at his best as a teacher both in and out of the classroom. National Chemistry Week evolved from his vision of the importance of telling everyone that chemistry brings a wide range of goods and functions to society and thus is vital to our democracy. That is why we must continually commit to communicate the value chemistry to the public at large and to decision-makers in government and the private sector. We must promote chemistry as the familiar science. The familiarity of chemistry has yet to be fully exploited in reaching all segments of society, especially the nonspecialists. We must increase awareness of chemicals, their transformations, hazards, and how they benefit our health, safety, and environment. I will discuss approaches to have every week be national chemistry week for us and for everyone else.
