The biosynthesis of bacterial cell wall peptidoglycan is one of a handful of validated broad-spectrum antibacterial targets. This talk will describe recent progress in understanding a key step in the peptidoglycan biosynthetic pathway -- the transglycosylation step, which involves the formation of the glycan chains -- as well as new developments in the discovery of inhibitors.
