| This study was conducted in a general chemistry course for non-majors, primarily students in agriculture, nursing, and liberal arts. It examined the ways in which students make connections between lab experiments and their everyday lives and future careers. Using a constructivist framework, the author addressed the following research questions: What are students' perceptions of their lab experiences and the concepts covered in lab? How do students make sense of their experiences in lab within the framework of their future career s and everyday experiences? How can we improve the general chemistry experience to better serve non-majors? Survey and interview data from two semesters were analyzed. Results included students' understandings of and misconceptions about laboratory concepts and the nature of chemistry, students' views on how they will apply chemistry in their future careers, and students' ideas about the importance of chemistry in their everyday lives. Recommendations for curriculum reform are presented. |
