With an LSAC Innovative Project Grant the Columbus Section implemented a new Public Relations effort with Television Public Service Announcements. National Chemistry Week and Chemists Celebrate Earth Day TVPSAs were aired on local stations within one year of receiving the grant. The 30 second advertisements can be used by all 189 ACS local sections without additional production costs, only the nominal expense for a TV formatted copy. To place these advertisements in perspective, the CCED spot aired 28 times for Earth Day a value of $3990.00 of free TV time. The spots can be downloaded from www.chemistry.org/earthday under innovative promotions. Techniques one novice used to capture TV station attention and air time will be presented. This public relations experience is being shared as part of Local Section Best Practices to encourage more local sections to seek free public service announcement air time along with typical ACS event press releases.
