Easy synthetic access to [(Cym)RuCl]2, where cym is p-iPr-toluene, allows evaluation of the reducing potential of this Ru/Ru bonded species of monovalent Ru. It is oxidized by HCl to give Cym2Ru2Cl2(m-H)(m-Cl). The products of its reaction with double- and single-oxygen atom transfer reagents O2 and Me3NO will be discussed. [N(SiMe2CH2PtBu2)2]RuCl reacts with N2 in the presence of magnesium powder to form a diamagnetic product which binds N2; the details of electron redistribution in this product will be discussed.
