| Based on the observations that many effective universal residues possess either large dipole moments or large aromatic surface areas, we report the design and synthesis of carbazole nucleosides that show excellent promiscuities when paired with canonical DNA bases. In addition to the lack of base pairing specificities, the best residues produce only minimal destabilization in the double helical complexes. These data will be related to the structural features of potential universal residues and provide the means to rationally design new bases for a large number of biomedical applications. |
