The application of malic acid as a renewable feedstock for the synthesis of functional cyclic diesters will be presented. Selective protection of the α-acid and hydroxyl group allows the derivation of the β-carboxylic acid with high levels of selectivity allowing access to a range of monomers suitable for ring-opening polymerization to yield highly functional poly(ester)s.
