The Freidel Crafts acylation of ferrocene is a common experiment used in undergraduate labs. We discuss modifying this lab to include some green chemistry concepts. We will discuss using a polymeric sulfonic acid (Nafion) as a replacement for phosphoric acid and using microwave vs. thermal heating. The advantages and disadvantages of using Nafion for this reaction will be presented. The relative yields of acetylferrocene and conditions for use of Nafion will be presented. Experiments with other solid state acids and regenerated Nafion will be discussed.
