| At the University of Massachusetts Lowell's Center for Green Chemistry we have been engaged in an aggressive K-12 community outreach program. It is our opinion that each researcher in the laboratory on the frontier of science discovery is uniquely poised as an ambassador to green chemistry. We have found in the past several years, through our interactions with various K-12 classes, that “one size certainly does not fit all”. Every municipality, every school and every classroom has a unique composition, history and set of needs and expectations. It would be presumptuous to believe that one “pre-packaged” set of modules could be applied indiscriminately. The model which has evolved that we find most effective is to work in consultation with the classroom teacher and develop a collaborative relationship well before the actual visit or event. This presentation will illustrate a variety of examples of K-12 outreach and green chemistry curriculum development in practice. |
