In 2002, the University of Detroit Mercy Chemistry Club set a goal to increase awareness of green chemistry both at the university and in the surrounding community. Within the university, the club encouraged the teaching of the 12 principles of green chemistry and atom economy calculations in courses, set up a recycling program within the chemistry building, and posted the 12 principles on the club's website. To reach the surrounding community, the club gave a green chemistry presentation at the annual earth day event, hosted a meeting to inform local high school teachers about how to incorporate the principles of green chemistry into their curriculum. The club also organized a green chemistry themed clinic in which middle school students discussed green chemistry and participated in a water purity study.
